What's your day job?

I'm an editor for a publishing company.

When and how did you get into derby?

In 2015, I was about to start my new job in Macon and I had so much free time I was going insane. A friend hassled me (lovingly!) about coming to a practice and trying roller derby, and I eventually relented. I didn't have a clue what roller derby was (I'd never even seen Whip It?) but I knew it involved skating. I think if I had known it was a contact sport, I might have been too intimidated to go, if we're being honest. But everyone was super nice, and the first thing they taught me was how to fall safely, and I learned a lot, and I just never stopped going!

How much of your time would you say you dedicate to roller derby (or roller derby related activities) in an average week?

​Oof. So much time. I feel like whenever I'm not working, I'm probably either at practice, at the gym, or reading/watching stuff about roller derby.

What kind of athletic experience did you have before getting involved with roller derby?

I played volleyball and basketball in high school.

What's the most meaningful lesson you've learned from roller derby?

No matter what kind of body or mind you have, you have something valuable to bring to the table. Be assertive & own it.

What advice would you give to a new skater?

You're doing a tough, brave thing and your thighs are going to be really sore for a while!

Why is being a Middle Georgia Derby Demon important to you?

Supporting local charities is a huge part of what we do, and I honestly think it makes us better teammates. Everyone genuinely cares about supporting and empowering others, so being a Demon has taught me a lot about being a team player on the track as well as in my community.

What's one thing you wish everyone understood about this sport?

We're just like other athletes! We have different offensive & defensive plays, lineups, and game strategies. Our training committee helps us analyze game footage and develop new techniques. We practice almost every other day, we crosstrain, and we go to clinics to improve our individual skills. We just don't get paid :)

What's on your bout day/practice playlist?

Run the Jewels, Lizzo, Missy Elliott...anything that makes me feel that good mix of angry/powerful/happy. 

Favorite post-bout/practice meal?

Beer & lots of carbs.
