Secret Identity: "Ilennis M Heredia-Landrau"

What's your day job?

Electronic Engineer (Test Engineer)

When and how did you get into derby?

I got into derby around September 2016. After watching the movie Whip It a long time ago I found the sport interesting. A long time after I watched it, I moved to Georgia from Puerto Rico. I had almost forgotten about the sport, but one day I went to eat at Stevi B's and saw a flyer for the Middle Georgia Derby Demons. I kept it until I was able to go to one of their bootcamps.

How much of your time would you say you dedicate to roller derby (or roller derby related activities) in an average week?

Around 10 hours.

What kind of athletic experience did you have before getting involved with roller derby?

When I was a kid I did some basketball. In college I had a gym membership and my favorite thing to do was spinning. Besides that, I was not that athletic.

What's the most meaningful lesson you've learned from roller derby?

Always get up! And... you learn at your own pace. This is not a race.

What advice would you give to a new skater?

Just keep skating, ask a lot of questions, and get lower. The more you skate and the more you ask, the more help you'll receive to succeed and you will fall in love with the sport.

Why is being a Middle Georgia Derby Demon important to you?

Being a Demon is a huge part in my life right now. After I moved to Georgia I didn't know anyone and I was feeling alone. Even after I joined my band (I am a musician, and have been since I was 9) I felt I was not doing much and something was missing. When I got to the team, I found a sisterhood and lots of love.

What's one thing you wish everyone understood about this sport?

This is not wrestling! It is a full contact sport and there is no rivalry here. After each game we all get together and have a good time.

What's on your bout day/practice playlist?

Some reggaeton or merengue to get motivated.

Who's your derby idol and why?

Wreck-It-Rae! My teammate! She never quits and is always teaching me something or giving me the support I need. In addition, she is a great skater and an awesome blocker.

Favorite post-bout/practice meal?

Pizza or a good double bacon cheeseburger with an egg on top.

Hobbies outside of roller derby?

My other passion, and my first one, is music. I've been a musician since I was 9. I started playing the flute. A couple years later I started playing tenor saxophone. When I got to college, I was in the marching band and the director put me on the piccolo. At first I hated it because I felt I was betraying the flute but after a while I really liked it. Lastly, after I joined the Middle Georgia Concert B, I started playing the alto saxophone. Music is something that makes me feel like I am somewhere else and nothings matter but the passion I put into playing my instrument.
