Secret Identity: "Debi Beckler"

What's your day job?

Restaurant manager

When and how did you get into derby?

Beat-a-trick Kiddo from Savannah Derby Devils is an old friend of my husband's and he told me about how she played for a long time. So I looked up my nearest Roller Derby team and just kept doing it!

How much of your time would you say you dedicate to roller derby (or roller derby related activities) in an average week?

When I'm not practicing, I'm usually watching clips of top level roller derby athletes. So if that counts, a lot.

What kind of athletic experience did you have before getting involved with roller derby?

I hadn't done anything athletic since I was I junior in high school when I started, so not much.

What's the most meaningful lesson you've learned from roller derby?

That every place that we travel to and the teams that come to play us are filled with smart, intellectual, independent, confident, ass-kicking women who inspire me and others to do what ever it is that motivates you and be confident.

What advice would you give to a new skater?

It's going to hurt. You're going to want to quit but if you just keep pushing, you're in for an amazingly incredible ride full of the most inspiring people that you'll ever meet.

Why is being a Middle Georgia Derby Demon important to you?

I get to be a part of an incredible family, who does nothing but encourage and push me into being something that I never thought that I was capable of being the first time I laced up skates and went to a practice.

What's one thing you wish everyone understood about this sport?

How the points are scored. That's the first question anyone asks me.

Answer: During a jam, points are scored when a jammer on a scoring pass (every pass a jammer makes through the pack after the initial pass) laps members of the opposing team.

What's on your bout day/practice playlist?

"Saturday Night's Alright" by Elton John

Who's your derby idol and why?

Jackie Daniels. She is one of the most phenomenal Blockers/Jammers that I have even seen skate. I've also been in a skate clinic with her and she's one of the most down to earth and extremely friendly people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Favorite post-bout/practice meal?

Hobbies outside of roller derby?
