MGDD's beginning at Bibb Skate Arena

And now, an MGDD History Lesson!

MGDD first used Bibb Skate for a fundraiser. We had been having practices at the Olympia in Macon for the previous 6 months, but the headaches and problems with the space were numerous. When we approached them about the desire for a Skate-a-thon fundraiser, we were told that it would have to be overnight and we would have to employ 2 cops to ensure safety. That was the end of Olympia for us.

We called this Fundraiser "Derby for Dana," and we raised money for the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Dana Smith passed away from breast cancer in 2010 and was the mother of our first captain, Stephanie Ryals. Stephanie was a competitive figure roller skater in her youth, and many of her practices had been at Bibb, so when she approached Mike Skelly about using the rink, he welcomed us with open arms.

We held the event on October 15, 2011. The moment we stepped into the rink and rolled onto that floor, we knew we were home. A little over a year later we would hold our very first bout there, on November 10, 2012.

The top photo is MGDD's first day at Bibb, and, of course, the bottom photo is from the last day. I can only count 2 people who are in both photos. Look how you've grown and changed, my Derby Demons.
