March 2017, I don't even know how I came across the post on Facebook that shared the event, but I am so thankful I did!! I am always a big scaredy cat about trying new things and I figured now is a great time to fix that. :)
How much of your time would you say you dedicate to roller derby (or roller derby related activities) in an average week?
At least 3 nights/mornings for practice, another night if we have an event that we help with. Since I'm still pretty new, it has really amazed me to see how much these girls get involved with the community. For myself, being able to get involved too is really fun and I am learning so much more about my community in the process.
What kind of athletic experience did you have before getting involved with roller derby?
As a kid I mainly played volleyball. For the past 3 years I have done crossfit and it helped me monumentally when I started skating I think. Some movements in derby I was able to relate to something from crossfit or weightlifting and it just has been so beneficial!
What's the most meaningful lesson you've learned from roller derby?
Don't think about it too much!! Any time I am having trouble learning a skill is because I overthink it. Any time I get worried about playing I am just overthinking it. I have to remember to get out of my own way and just have fun with it.
What advice would you give to a new skater?
Always have a can do attitude. Even if you *know* you can't do something or never have, always be willing to learn, and fall, get back up, and fall some more, but always get back up! A positive attitude will always get you farther.
Why is being a Middle Georgia Derby Demon important to you?
It is so empowering :) This is such a great group of encouraging people!! Also, I am the youngest of a big family but they are all on the other side of the country. I have my husband and furbabies, and getting to be a part of a big loving family over here too really helps!
What's one thing you wish everyone understood about this sport?
Most people think we go out there and duke it out like fighters. I like to explain it as more of football on wheels. ha! We have rules. There is strategy, there is endurance, and there is SO much skill.
What's on your bout day/practice playlist?
Anything with a good beat to get this booty movin!!
Who's your derby idol and why?
Whoever has the secret to make my feet move like magic!!
Favorite post-bout/practice meal?
Jerky!! and allllll the waterrrrrrr
Hobbies outside of roller derby?
Random crafting, which has come in handy with making the MVP awards for the bouts now :) annnnd taking pictures of my furbabies and watching cat videos, because that is what the internet was made for.
