Bill of Fights

Secret Identity: "Liz Rary"

What's your day job?

Law student

When and how did you get into derby?

I was always interested in derby but never really stuck to it. The first time I tried it in undergrad, I got discouraged when I failed the first assessments and looking back on that makes me pity my past self. Roller Derby became essential to building my confidence and reclaiming my body and the space around it. So it was easy to stick around once I came back.

How much of your time would you say you dedicate to roller derby (or roller derby related activities) in an average week?

With school, I try to carve out at least 5 hours a week for derby. Roller Derby has become essential to my mental health and I can't imagine going longer than a week without skating.

What kind of athletic experience did you have before getting involved with roller derby?

In high school I played soccer and ran cross country. I was extremely bad at the latter. In soccer I played goalie because I loved having to spring up and down quickly.

What's the most meaningful lesson you've learned from roller derby?

It's possible to get back up after falling even if a skate wheel goes somewhere where the sun does not shine.

What advice would you give to a new skater?

Don't get discouraged. We don't become Scald Eagle overnight. It takes practice and a little bit of guts to keep going but remember that you have an entire team behind you cheering you on. When a new skater succeeds, the whole league does too.

Why is being a Middle Georgia Derby Demon important to you?

MGDD has introduced me to the most amazing, strong people that I have ever met. League members care for one another in a way that you don't see anywhere else.

What's one thing you wish everyone understood about this sport?

Please stop asking me if I have punched any women on the track.

What's on your bout day/practice playlist?

Who's your derby idol and why?

I saw a few ARG bouts and I always loved watching Treblemaker. She is always so focused and I want to channel that.

Favorite post-bout/practice meal?

Taco Bell because when you've left a sweat stain the size of a small loveseat on the concrete floor of the practice space, you deserve a quesadilla and a few (or 10) soft potato tacos.

Hobbies outside of roller derby?

Baking bread has always been my stress release. It's like playdough you can later eat with jam.
